Ballroom Dance for “You Make My Dreams Come True”?

I am getting married shortly, and our first dance will be to the song “You make my dreams come true” by Hall and Oates (I’m not a fan of the slow first dance thing). What type of dance would be a good one, based on the beat of this song, to choreograph for our first dance? A less complex step would be ideal.

We are planning on going to a professional, but my Fiancee has never done ballroom dance before so I wanted to get her up to speed on some basic steps before we start paying a lot per hour. Suggestions?

Quite honestly, this is a question that can not be answered online. With words and text, you can not make up a ballroom dance, or any type of dance routine.
You need to hire a professional ballroom dancer, a private dance teacher. I’d say a professional choreographer would be the best.
Once you hired a professional/teacher, I would explain to them your boundaries, rules, and preferences. Show them your choice of music, and explain to them you wish a non-complex routine, and give out more details of what you have in mind. They should be able to help you create a beautiful ball-room dance routine for you.

This song would work well for a quickstep. It can be pretty complex, and is quite the cardio workout, but it is a fun dance all the same.

They’re right. It would be a fun quickstep however that is a very difficult dance to pull off not having worked your way up to it, I would not recommend that at all. I would suggest doing a fun single time swing. You could do triple time swing but that may be too fast for you guys if you are wanting something simple like you said. The other dance would be a 4 count hustle. It is a very upbeat song and I could see an instructor having fun showing you some good steps or getting a really fun and playful routine for you. I suggest going to a certified instructor. I taught for Arthur Murray’s and have friends who teach for Fred Astaire. That is who I would recommend. So I would tell them you would like either a Single Time Swing or a Hustle to learn. Have them show you both dances in a freestyle with someone. It’s your dance so tell them your ideas of anything goofy or creative you want to work into it. If you want more info from me you can always put some sort of contact details and I can get in touch. I would suggest not dancing the whole song either. It’s up to you but I always told my students, It doesn’t matter what the routine is, people will get get bored eventually, even if it is your wedding dance. I would do no more that about 2 minutes. The only way I would do the whole song is if you had an ongoing routine that was changing/entertaining the whole time. I am sure you will do awesome. Don’t worry about wasting a lesson by not learning steps beforehand. If you learn steps and start to make it a habit before the instructor sees you, you may have to backtrack. Also, they should be able to get you dancing by the first lesson anyway. I always did and that was our goal. I taught at the San Diego, Lake Forest and Phoenix Arthur Murray’s so if you happen to go to any of those, you can let them know you got your info from Tim Gregory. :o )
