Is It Possible for a Bad Dancer to Learn Ballroom?

I’m fascinated by ballroom dancing and would love to learn, but I have two left feet. I tried participating in a school program where the students had to perform a couple of ballroom dances (they even brought in a dance instructor for this) but I couldn’t keep up with the rest of the students.

Is it possible for me to learn/improve if I keep trying?

The Standard/Smooth dances are based on the normal walking step. If you can walk, you can learn ballroom. Your school program, I’m guessing, was trying to teach a lot of steps instead of focusing on the fundamentals. It’s common but not the best approach.

I had never danced in my life prior to learning ballroom. Now after a year, I can handle myself pretty well socially.

Be sure to learn from an instructor that focuses more on techniques than patterns. You can always pick up patterns in a group class, but the technique will make all the difference.
